Holiday Rambler Battery Maintenance
For those people who own a Holiday Rambler, the hassles of travel are
few. There are no missed planes, travel itineraries, security checks, or
lost luggage (unless you leave it somewhere along the way.) You don’t
have to make hotel reservations and you can eat a “home cooked” meal
every night. However, even in a Holiday Rambler there are a few hassles
that you can encounter if you have not properly maintained your recreational
vehicle. For those people who own a Holiday Rambler, the hassles of travel
are few. There are no missed planes, travel itineraries, security checks,
or lost luggage (unless you leave it somewhere along the way.) You don’t
have to make hotel reservations and you can eat a “home cooked” meal
every night. However, even in a Holiday Rambler there are a few hassles
that you can encounter if you have not properly maintained your recreational
vehicle. These hassles can produce setbacks which can turn an enjoyable
travel experience free from stress into a small nightmare. This is why
it is important to keep the different components of your Holiday Rambler
maintained. In this article battery maintenance is the focus.
There are few things more frustrating than going out to your car, getting in, buckling the seatbelt, putting the key in the ignition and turning the key only to hear a sputter or worse yet, silence. It may be even more frustration if you experience this while you are out on the road in your Holiday Rambler. Maybe you are parked at a remote location because you wanted to “get away from it all.” But now what are you going to do. Unless you carry a spare battery with you, you will have to make the effort to find someone kind enough to give you a jump start or to take you to where you can buy a new battery.
One of the easiest things that you can do to maintain your Holiday Rambler battery is to keep it clean. The terminals (where the clamps are attached) need to be cleaned periodically to remove acid buildup around the clamp and the terminal that prevents it from getting a proper connection.
To clean the battery in your Holiday Rambler or other vehicle, you simply make a paste of baking soda and water and use a toothbrush to clean the battery terminals and the clamps. If you want you can even remove the clamps-making sure you take off the negative clamp first-before you begin to clean your Holiday Rambler battery. As you apply it, it will bubble and fizz. This is normal. Once you have complete cleaned off the terminal and the clamp, you should rinse both of them with water to get off the residue completely. Sometimes the clamps on the battery of a Holiday Rambler or other vehicle are so covered with acid that they cannot be removed. In this case, you may have to replace the clamps along with the battery and this will probably be best completed by someone with mechanical training. Once the battery clamps and terminals on your Holiday Rambler are clean you should apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the terminal to protect it from further disintegration and acid damage.
Another thing that you should check carefully on the battery of your Holiday Rambler is the condition of the wires leading to and from the battery. The insulation on the wires should not be cracked and the wires should not look worn or frayed. If this is the case you will need to have those cables replaced. Take your vehicle to someone who is experienced in Holiday Rambler or recreational vehicle repair and have it taken care of before the problem becomes more serious.
A trip on the road in a Rambler is a great way to pass the time, see the sights or visit relatives and friends. Don’t let a lapse in your maintenance schedule prevent you from having these types of opportunities and experiences. If you take care of your recreational vehicle, it will take care of you as well.
